A FEW MORE RENDERINGS

At a button's touch, this custom made table can light up and change color to enhance the mood or suggest any holiday.

In a closed off dust free room that was temperature and humidity controlled, I constructed a table comprised of 5/8" MDF core with 3/4" raw hickory floor planks that I cut to create a void for the epoxy.  I sealed the MDF with primer and then applied a seal coat of epoxy to help prevent air bubbles escaping from the wood.  Next, a two part epoxy was mixed and poured with tinted shimmering white and black Mica powder pigments.  For good measure, I also added industrial glow-in-the-dark pigments so the epoxy can illuminate when all light are off.  After the 3/4" void was filled with the deep poor epoxy and allowed to cure for several days, the table top was planed and sanded so the epoxy and hickory was smooth and flat.  A seal coat followed by a flood coat of epoxy was poured over the entire table.  I wanted a matte finish so the entire table was sanded starting with 120 grit sandpaper and progressively worked up to a 4000 grit.  The table was then turned over and was routed into so an LED strip lite could be attached under the table.  Finally, 1/4" white melamine board was cut and then screwed to the underside of the table to help keep the lighting in place and create a finished look.

I decided to use 1-1/2" steel band with holes which was flexible enough to bend around the curved part of the table along with 501 1/2" #12 screws to secure the metal band.  The band served three purposes:

  1. covered the side of the table to conceal the MDF core and melamine undercarriage
  2. added structural integrity to help keep the table from warping
  3. added industrial look
  • Creates an opening for electric cords to run through and out of the way when indulging for the yearly family Christmas tradition of fondue.

  • Creates a threaded opening to insert a customer made epoxy elevated Lazy-Susan.  Great for meals with many condiments such as Hamburgers, or many toppings such as tacos.
